Music
Grateful Dead, Days Between, 1994
The music I’ve put on this website is mainly female artists. But my favourite band is The Grateful Dead, who were playing as a band for 30 years between 1965 and 1995. Out of all the remarkable music they produced what do I choose? What I’ve done here is gone with a very late song, Days Between. It’s rare because it was never released on a Grateful Dead studio album and neither does it appear on a live album. It was one of the last songs they performed. This one is dated 1994 only about a year before Jerry Garcia died and they stopped recording and performing as The Dead. On this clip Jerry Garcia does look old and not very well. But his performance and guitar playing is brilliant. His singing many people may not describe as great but I disagree with that because his singing perfectly fits the songs he wrote. And Days Between is a great song.
Bat For Lashes, Moon on Moon, Manchester 2019
I put a version of this song on my old web site because it had such an impact on me. The funny thing is this performance means such a lot to me because I was at the concert where this clip of Natasha Khan was recorded, at Manchester in 2019. So I’ve decided to put it on my new web site.
Kate Bush, Cloudbusting, Hammersmith Odeon, 2014
Ok, I’ll be honest here – Kate Bush is up there as one of the greatest musical artists ever! She hadn’t played live for 35 years but she did a series of concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in 2014, and they all sold out in one morning but I got tickets for one! The hilarious thing is that she told everybody who had tickets – in an incredibly polite and ever so nice way – that nobody should get their mobile phones out at any of the concerts and record or film her.. and pretty nearly everyone respected her request. So, clips of her performing in 2014 are incredibly rare. I realise I should probably say sorry to Kate or not put this on my website but, let’s face it, I think it does capture a great moment from one of her live concerts! The first minute of this video is a scene from a much earlier broadcast but it is worth sitting through that as it does join her performance at Hammersmith. I should warn you it’s a bloody terrible film (as you see the backs of loads of people’s heads) but it’s also bloody fantastic! Cloudbusting was performed as an encore. Watch it to the end as you’ll hear the audience joining in and singing the final refrain of the song along with Kate Bush. Listen carefully and you’ll hear her say to the audience “I wanna hear ya.”.It’s an amazing video and it does catch one of those indescribable moments at a live gig. And it really is up there as one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever been to.
Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now, Newport Folk Festival, 2022
I’ve always been a huge fan of Joni Mitchell. Both Sides Now was written and first performed in the 1960s. This version was recorded at the Newport Folk Festival in 2022. Joni Mitchell was 80 when she won a Grammy Award for this performance the year after. After all those years the words to this song still carry a meaning with them – perhaps even more than when it was first played – because Joni and everybody else is so much older!
Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention, Who Knows Where The Time Goes?, 1969
This is a clip of Fairport Convention’s version of Sandy Denny’s song which, in 2006, was voted (quite rightly) as being the greatest folk-rock song of all time. Sandy Denny died in 1978 of a brain haemorrhage, at the young age of 31. “Across the evening sky, All the birds are leaving,
But how can they know, It’s time for them to go?” So, come on, who does know where the time goes?!
